Founded in 1944, Kia is the oldest South Korean car manufacturer. Although in the beginning the company was dealing with steel tubing and producing bicycle parts by hand, very soon the company started to produce any kind of vehicles. The company as we all know today is headquartered in Seoul and is the second largest and most popular car manufacturer in South Korea. Since June 2012, Kia is 32.8% owned by Hyundai, which means that it is a subsidiary of it. Every year, over one million vehicles are produced in 13 manufacturing operation centres in eight different countries and then are sold through a wide network of distributors and dealers in 172 different countries. Established in 1982, Daewoo was one of the best South Korean car brands. By 1999, the whole Daewoo Group had a financial trouble and was forced to sell the automotive division to General Motors. The company became a subsidiary of the American company and was renamed to GM Daewoo. In 2011, Daewoo was once again renamed to its current name â GM Korea. GM Korea has five manufacturing facilities in South Korea and one assembly facility in Vietnam. Today, the company produces kits and vehicles for Holden, Chevrolet, Buick and Opel, which are represented in over 150 markets on six continents.
Renault Samsung Motors
Renault Samsung Motors (RSM) is a South Korean corporation that manufactures cars for the Korean market mainly. Headquartered in Busan, the company was known as Samsung Motors, but in 2000, it became a subsidiary of Renault, but still Samsung holds 90% of the ownership. The company has one of the biggest research and development facilities and because of it, the RSM cars have such advanced technology. Renault Samsung Motors currently has a production capacity of about 200,000 vehicles, but with its plans to span over many different countries, its production capacity can only increase in near future.
